The Wellcare Hydraulic Set Production Packer is a hydraulic-set cut-to-release packer that combines the pressure and temperature ratings and reliability of a permanent packer with the convenience of a retrievable packer. The HP-15 retrievable packer is designed using unique design features that result in a retrievable packer suitable for high differential pressure and high temperature applications. The barrel slip located below the elements uniformly distributes the packer to casing loads. The propped element package reliably seals the high pressures and can be retrieved with the packer. Once this packer is run and set, it is released by cutting the mandrel. When the mandrel is properly and completely cut, the packer will release and all of the packer components along with the tailpipe can be retrieved from the well.


NOTE: Consideration of downhole correlation of cutters must be taken into account during pre-job planning. This may include the use of a nipple profile, locator profile, radioactive tag, collar locator, etc. This information should be maintained in the well files for future reference.

CAUTION: Do not apply torque across this assembly while making up or breaking out the tubing thread. Grip on the end subs or mandrel directly to apply torque or to hold backup.


Design Principle

With the packer at the desired depth, the tubing is plugged below the packer. Pressure is applied down the tubing and when the pressure reaches a predetermined amount, the start-to-set shear screws shear allowing the lower piston to stroke down releasing the collet on the lower end of the internal-slip housing. Continued pressure simultaneously moves the upper piston up causing the Elements to compress and expand against the casing and the lower piston to move down to deploy the barrel slip outward to the casing wall within the upper and lower cones. The body lock ring retains the setting forces.

Once set, the packer will retain mechanical and pressure loads An internal slip located under the upper cone transmits the tubing-to-packer compressive forces directly into

the barrel slip. To retrieve the packer, the mandrel is cut. When the mandrel is properly and completely cut, the packer will release and all of the packer components along with the tailpipe can be retrieved from the well.

This packer contains tubing threads on both ends, but does not provide a seal unit connection or seal bore within the packer.

Features

  2. Anti-Reset - Once the packer is released a snap ring engages the mandrel, locking the lower cone in This helps hold the barrel slip in the retracted position.

NOTE: While is it not generally recommended to run hydraulic set packers downhole after release, the anti-reset snap ring locks the lower cone after release to prevent inadvertent deployment of the barrel slip. This feature may also help recovery of the packer from a floating rig during heavy sea swell.

Releasing & Retrieving Procedure

The WELLCARE Hydraulic set production Packer is designed to be released by cutting the mandrel. When the mandrel is properly and completely cut, the packer will release and all packer components and the tailpipe can be retrieved from the wellbore. The mandrel may be cut using chemical cutters, mechanical cutters, pyrotechnic, fluid jet, etc.
